The Problem
We know that nearly 70% of global freshwater is used by agricultural systems.
Urban farms, in their current form, are inconvenient + inefficient. This promotes dependency on traditional unsustainable agricultural practices.
We also know that traditional agriculture poses a number of problems: food security, land degradation, immense fossil fuel consumption.
A large amount of food that is purchased in markets are imported from outside of our borders which leads to many extra costs.
Is there a way we can make agriculture more sustainable? Can we increase the efficiency of water usage in urban agricultural applications?
What are we doing about this?
We are attempting to facilitate more local food growth by making urban farming more doable.
How are we going about doing this?
By creating a standalone, convenient food growing unit that can be used easily in the most common of urban settings. This food growing unit would also reduce the pressure on the urban biosphere whilst boosting its ecological benefits.
Structural supports -------->
Panels hold the netpods for the plants ------>
Base holds the water reservoir and electrical components --->
Introducing "Loop":
a modular, stand-alone aeroponics system. It uses misting technology and a circular water system.
What does that mean? It means it can grow fresh produce anywhere with minimal waste.
-
Internally misting the plant roots to reduce water consumption
-
Looped water system, returning to the reservoir in the base.
Our Solution
-
All components connect to one base, making it standalone
-
Water automatically recollects in base reservoir
-
Panels that hold various plants
